Following the River Symposium

The Following the River Symposium is part of the broader Prairie Literacies Project. It invites participants to consider literacy as more than reading and writing alone, and to explore how learning is shaped by relationships, place, multilingualism, culture, and lived experience.

Through conversation, shared inquiry, and place-based experiences, the symposium brings together diverse perspectives on literacy across prairie contexts.

As portions of the symposium will take place outdoors, participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and be prepared for movement between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Additional details, including the full schedule and location information, will be shared with registered participants.

What to Expect

  • opportunities for dialogue and shared reflection
  • conversations grounded in prairie places and communities
  • a focus on relational, multilingual, and place-based literacies
  • time to connect with educators, researchers, and community partners
  • opportunities for creative and artistic expression as part of the learning experience

Optional School Visit

An optional Friday school visit will provide participants with the opportunity to tour awâsisak kâ-nîmihitocik St. Francis School and explore how place, language, and community shape learning environments.

The school’s design reflects contributions from families, Elders, and educators, offering an example of how learning spaces can be grounded in relationships and local context.

Space for this visit may be limited, and interest is being collected through the registration form.

Schedule

Schedule details will be shared with registered participants.

The morning portion of the symposium will be hosted at The Venue @ McLean Block in Saskatoon.
